HOW TO END THE THREAT OF NUCLEAR WAR
A thought from Howard Zinn.
“Historically, the most terrible things… war, genocide, and slavery have resulted not from disobedience but from obedience.”
The military code of conduct tells us not to obey illegal orders. Now is the time for everyone in and out of our military be prepared to disobey
any order to conduct nuclear suicide. We will not obey the president. We will not obey anyone telling us to kill millions of non-combatants. We will follow the example of the
Soviet nuclear sub commander who refused to lob a nuclear weapon at the United States.
This is the kind of disobedience we are called to use now. Yes, Putin should have a White House meeting on this issue. Roosevelt and Truman met with Stalin. Diplomacy does not require friendship.
It requires dialogue.
Our fundamental problem is not a failed president. Our fundamental problem is that we have two military industrial parties dedicated to perpetual war.
This creates profit without useful production and leads to wild inflation inthe price of useful things like homes. A $50,000. home is now selling for
a million in many places. Too much money created by military production and gaming financialization. It’s time to put these outdated parties behind us and join George Washington in his distain for all political parties.
Our current president was elected because of military-industrial government together with a unique horror created by mistrust of our citizens and slavery.
It is called the Electoral College. No other nation has this misfortune. There would be no Trump presidency were there no electoral college.
Our task is to learn disobedience to nuclear weapons and to use the best of our
nonviolent methodology…the boycott, non-cooperation, and divestment on all who
maintain the nuclear threat.
Over a year ago 122 nations voted to support a treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons.
Russia and the United States refused to join the common good and stupidly
refused to sign the treaty. Yes, it is time for Russia and the United States to
meet and discuss the possibility of sanity in international relations.
Any individuals, groups or nations involved in plotting, planning, or conspiring to
conduct nuclear war must be declared the enemy of life on this planet.
