I’d like to wish you a blessed Christmas Day. I was thinking today of WWI, which was an orgy of international insanity in pursuit of profit. We remember those old songs: “You’re a grand old flag, Give my regards to Broadway, Send the word, the Yanks are coming, pack all your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile…” I think the author of that one actually committed suicide. But Irving Berlin did very well as a sunshine patriot. And our young men marched off to die with no idea at all what the war was about. This is the sickness of militarism masquerading as patriotism.
