Pacifica Commentary for June 24, 2004
Hello, this is Blase Bonpane with a comment. Why should we consider impeachment of
the president when we are so close to an election? We must promote impeachment
because in so doing we can clearly express the crimes of this government without any
partisan consideration. Campaign talk is simply a form of advertising. In promoting
impeachment we are stating facts of law, not advertising. What is more, should Bush be
elected for the first time, we will have the foundation for immediate impeachment
proceedings.
Here are some of the charges made by former Attorney General of the United States,
Ramsey Clark:
President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of Defense
Donald H. Rumsfeld, and Attorney General John David Ashcroft have committed
violations and subversions of the Constitution of the United States of America in an
attempt to carry out with impunity crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes
and deprivations of civil rights of the people of the United States and other nations, by
assuming powers of an imperial executive unaccountable to the law and usurping powers
of Congress, the Judiciary and those reserved to the people of the United States by the
following acts:
1. Seizing power to wage wars of aggression in defiance of the U.S. Constitution, the
U.N. Charter and the rule of law, carrying out a massive assault on and occupation of
Iraq, a country that is not threatening the United States, and resulting in the death and
maiming of tens of thousands of Iraqis and hundreds of U.S. G.I.'s.
2. Lying to the people of the United States, to Congress and to the United Nations,
providing false and deceptive rationales for war,
These are only two of the seventeen charges made by the former Attorney General.

The question of choosing impeachment over election is frequently asked. Both processes
are essential to the health of the nation at this time of crisis. Elections are about voting for
a preferred candidate; impeachment is about criminal wrongdoing.
To quote Dr. Martin Luther King, "The saving of our world from pending doom will
come, not through the complacent adjustment of the conforming majority, but through the
creative maladjustment of a non-conforming minority."
