Pacifica Commentary for April 14, 2003
Hello, this is Blase Bonpane with a comment.
How about a little quiz on government? What is the purpose of our government? We are a nation based on self government which is the principle that the people are the ultimate source of governing authority and that their general welfare is the only legitimate purpose of government.
Therefore the government of the United States must not be the government of Iraq.
The only legitimate purpose of the government of the United States is the general welfare of the people of the United States.
Can you name one thing that the current unelected government has done for the general welfare of the people of the United States? It seems to me that the only possible answer is, "No, I can't."
But how do you get the masses of the people to ignore the failure of government to do its job of providing for the general welfare of the people of the United States? That is done by allowing Carl Rove to be the master of fear manipulation to frighten the people so much that all they will ask from government is protection, not performance.
Did the present unelected government of the United States have any authorization to kill Iraqi children? No it did not?
Did the present governing clique have any authority to traumatize the children of Iraq for life and destroy their nervous system by shell shock? No it did not? Would you call this
child molestation? Yes, I would.
Does the end justify the means? No it does not. How long will our troops be in Iraq?
With Korea as an example they will be there at least 53 years.
What about the people cheering regime change in Iraq? This is exactly what they did when Saddam Hussein came into power in the first place. This is what the people of Cambodia did when Pol Pot took over that country. He subsequently killed a substantial percentage of the population.
If the only legitimate purpose of government is the general welfare of the people of the United States then the current resident of the White House has presided over a vacuum..
Franklin Roosevelt included freedom from fear as the fourth freedom. He insisted that we had nothing to fear but fear itself. But much of Mr. Bush's time domestically has been simply fostering and manipulating fear.
No one should profit from an illegal act. The temporary administration of Iraq is the legal task of the United Nations. As it stands now Iraq will simply be our Palestine. As such it will be nothing more than an ongoing disaster for the people of the United States.
Congratulations to the peace and justice movement for reminding our administration that we are a nation based on self government which includes the principle that the people are the ultimate source of governing authority and that their general welfare is the only legitimate purpose of government.
No war in Syria, No war in Iran and no war in North Korea. Should the current administration not understand this we suggest that the current incumbent follow the excellent example of Richard Nixon and resign.
